Brits who will be buying an Australian property and hoping to maintain their self-employed status have been urged to plan their move carefully.

Self-employed Brits who plan to move to an Australian property must ensure they thoroughly check the rules and regulations for running their business overseas, it has been advised.

If qualifications are required for their chosen role, they must check that currently-held accreditation is recognised, suggested Rhiannon Davies, co-founder of expat magazine Shelter Offshore.

"You need to look at the tax you will have to pay on everything from profits to dividends and on the salary you pay to any employed persons," she explained.

It is also important to consider whether the local environment can support the business, both in terms of infrastructure and market need, Ms Davies continued.

The issue of funding must also be considered for people moving to an Australian property and looking to carry on their business, as investment for non-nationals may be restricted, she added.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics have revealed that around 427,000 people emigrated from the UK in 2008, up from 341,000 in 2007.
