A survey of 7,500 people by actuaries and benefits consultants found out that 60 percent of Britons want to retire in another country. Their preference is one where the climate is warmer.
Aside from Britons, the survey showed that 46 percent of Germans and 49 percent of Irish have similar sentiments about retirement, while 87 percent of Spaniards and 81 percent of French prefer to remain in their mother country during their retirement years.
It is not only Spaniards who want to live in Spain during their twilight years, 23 percent of Britons selected Spain as their choice of retirement location. After Spain, the top retirement destinations made by Europeans are France, U.S., Italy and Australia.
Oliver Rowlands, Aon Consulting head of retirement, said many European workers are now more open to living overseas during their retirement years because they could still return home more often due to affordable plane fares and the Internet, which provides them communication tools to keep in touch with their relatives back home.
Many elder Britons, though, may have to postpone by a year or two their retirement plans because of the coalition government’s move to hike pension age for both male and female workers. However, 41 percent of Britons surveyed by the Department for Work and Pensions were not aware of the hike in pension age.
Another survey by financial services firm AXA showed that 69 percent of respondents have accepted the likelihood that the pension age will be increased and they will remain as part of the labor force until they reach 70 years old.
