The performance of Australia's capital cities is "critical" to the nation's growth agenda, it has been said.

An independent audit of the capitals by KPMG for the Built Environment Meets Parliament Alliance has been welcomed by the Property Council of Australia.

It highlights the importance of the cities but says there is still a long way to go if they are to continue to meet the challenges identified by the Council of Australian Governments.

"If we can lift the performance of our major capital cities, then we will lift the performance of our economy and create more liveable and sustainable communities," commented Peter Verwer, chief executive officer of the Property Council of Australia.

He urged the government to more actively engage in capital cities by combining the population policy portfolio with urban affairs and re-launching a targeted infrastructure programme and called on state authorities to take more responsibility.
