In 2019, it was announced that there may be changes to the Australian tax residency test reducing the time in Australia period from the current 183 days to new limit of 45 days. This was widely criticized and caused much concern for expats and migrants alike.
Here we are, over 5 years later and I am pleased to say that those changes have not, and are likely to never, occur. Yet, despite that, the internet is full of false claims and reports that it is coming soon, it simply is not.
I am glad to say that I feel our submission on this issue, which included the first real analysis of how people reacted to the changes, and our Parliamentary Petition (which had 5,730 signatories) were critical in stopping the advancement of the poorly written changes.
We have had informal acknowledgement that these changes will not be pursued any further, which is great news for all of us, as the current legislation is more than adequate. If we hear of anything further we will certainly share it with our community.
