Tourism increased in Australia in the final quarter of last year, new figures have suggested.
A report from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reveals that the average room occupancy rate for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms was 68.8 per cent in the December quarter.
This is an increase of 0.4 percentage points on the rate recorded in the previous three months.
"In the December quarter 2010, the trend estimate of total accommodation takings for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms increased by 1.8 per cent to $2.08 billion [£1.3 billion] compared with the September quarter 2010," the ABS report states.
It also reveals that, in seasonally-adjusted terms, it is estimated that these accommodation takings increased by 1.7 per cent to $2,078.3 million in the same period.
Earlier this month, a report from Tourism Research Australia showed that total of 5,440,894 million people aged over 15 visited the country last year.
