The world has changed forever

September 11 had a profound impact on everyone, and in this article Steve Douglas considered some of the issues in his regular newsletter column.

September 11, 2001 will be another day the world will never forget for all the wrong reasons.

The sheer devastation inflicted upon the World Trade Centre in New York, and to lesser extent the Pentagon in Washington, was not only surreal in many ways, but was also a tragedy that the world was able to watch live and through the graphic images replayed thousands of times.

One can only speculate as to what the full impact of this event shall be on the world from an economic point of view, but needless to say it will be countless billions of dollars.

From an emotional perspective, few can fully appreciate what the impact of viewing such an event live on our television sets will have on all of us.

Once the issue of retribution has been addressed we can only hope that this event may bring about a positive change for all of us.

I for one, hold faith that this extreme action will finally let us all understand that we are one people regardless of birthplace, belief, creed or colour.

The action against the United States was not isolated to Americans, but touched no less than 60 countries who had citizens perish in the crash that brought down the twin towers of the World Trade Centre.

Having had the good fortune in my life to live and travel to many different nations and find friendships across many borders, ethnic persuasions and personalities, I have long believed that the world is indeed there for all of us.

As we now deal with the aftermath of such an event, we can clearly see how interdependent we are on each other and how fickle many of our prejudices and political persuasions are.

Let us take this opportunity to respect and honour those who have tragically lost their lives through no fault of their own, and those who have and may perish in assisting the protection of a free and fair world, by making a real and honest effort to belong to the one race we are, human kind.

To those who have lost family, friends or colleagues, we extend our deepest sympathy.

To everyone who has been touched by this event, we extend our real optimism of a brighter tomorrow.
