Sydney approves casino plans

Plans to add a second casino in Sydney has been supported by the New South Wales government.

Plans to add a second casino in Sydney has been supported by the New South Wales government.

James Packer and Crown submitted plans to develop a new casino with an 80-storey hotel to capitalise on the growing interest from Asian tourists.

At present, Echo Entertainment has exclusive rights to gambling in the state but strong demand means there will now be a second option for visitors.

The Crown casino will form part of the Barangaroo development and cost $1.4 billion to build. As well as a casino, there will be 350 hotel rooms and suites and 80 apartments.

“I want this building to be instantly recognisable around the world and featured on postcards and memorabilia promoting Sydney,” said Mr Packer.

“That’s how you attract international tourists, create jobs and put Sydney on the map.”
