More people are moving out of South Australia then coming into the state, according to the latest statistics.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) said the number of residents moving interstate has increased, with around 26,300 departing in 2008-09.

Young adults aged 20 to 39 are the most mobile and more likely to be seeking Australian migration property, accounting for nearly half of all movers and often heading to capital cities.

Over the six years to 2008-09, the average annual movement out of the state was 3,600 people, meaning thousands have been looking for Australian migration property.

Since 1971-72, there have only been four years when the state had positive net migration, the largest being 13,000 incoming people in 1974-75 because of relocation following Cyclone Tracy.

The Australian population is set to hit 36 million in the next 40 years, according to the Population Reference Bureau, a 65 per cent increase.
