Rental affordability situation worsening

The rental affordability situation in Australia is worsening, a report has claimed.

The rental affordability situation facing people leasing Australian homes has continued to degenerate, according to the Anglicare Sydney Rental Affordability Snapshot.

It examined the 10,200 properties available for rent in the city between April 8th and April 10th, finding that only 123 of these were available for households who rely solely on government benefits.

Anglicare chief executive officer Peter Kell warned that many people are facing housing stress in a city which is already one the country's most expensive in terms of cost of living.

"For the one million households nationally who rely nearly entirely on government benefits, their capacity to get by day-to-day is already at breaking point," added Mr Kell.

He urged the federal government to increase its targets for the provision of affordable housing in order to assuage this growing problem.

Australians for Affordable Housing's campaign manager Sarah Toohey responded to the report by warning that the market continues to be "dysfunctional".
