The Real Estate Institute of the Northern Territory (REINT) has said that the state government needs to make more land available for new Australian property to be built.
According to the institute, the Northern Territory government's decision to release six new house-and-land packages in Alice Springs is not enough.
The new homes will be made available to first homebuyers through a ballot.
Quentin Kilian, chief executive officer of the REINT, told API Magazine that these new properties only make a small dent in the territory's severe housing shortage.
"It's taken the government so long to actually get these packages out that in the interim, the problem has worsened," he explained.
Mr Kilian went on to tell the magazine that the government needs to create a long-term plan for Alice Springs in order to tackle the supply and demand problem which is continuing to grow.
Back in January, the territory's government announced that the 2010 targets for the Strategic Indigenous Housing and Infrastructure Program had been exceeded.
