Property market 'needs dedicated minister'

The state government should appoint a housing minister to deal with the issue of housing affordability in Victoria, claims an industry organisation.
A dedicated building minister should be appointed to address the affordability crisis surrounding Australian homes, according to the Master Builders Association of Victoria (MBAV).

The organisation has called on the state government to consider its request, which it claimed is necessary to address the prohibitively high cost of home ownership in the region.

Executive director of the MBAV Brian Welch said the median house price in Melbourne has risen from $129,000 (£84,000) in 1995 to $475,500 (£310,000) this year - almost six times the average salary.

"A minister dedicated to scrutinising housing affordability could really listen to what we and the greater building and Victorian community have to say," he commented.

Mr Welch claimed the issue has been exacerbated by a lack of cohesion between federal and state government bodies.

Last year, the association launched a campaign known as Is Anybody Listening?, which highlighted the problems surrounding housing affordability for people living in Victoria.
