The rate of population growth in the state capital cities of Australia slowed in 2009-10, new figures have revealed.
A report from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) shows that the growth rate in these cities was 2.2 per cent in 2008-09 but fell to 1.8 per cent in 2009-10.
All of the state capitals, except for Adelaide, Canberra and Hobart, experienced a slowdown in population growth.
Growth rates remained stable in Adelaide, Canberra and Hobart and were among the highest they have been in many years.
"The combined population of Australian capital cities increased by 257,800 people and accounted for over two-thirds of Australia's population growth," a statement from the ABS reveals.
Melbourne experienced the largest growth, increasing by 79,000 people to reach four million.
Earlier this week, the ABS revealed that Australia's population increased by 345,500 from the end of September 2009 to the end of the same month last year.
