The government needs to allow more migrants to move to Australia if the current skills shortage it is being faced with is to be met.
This claim was made by the Australian Industry Group (AIG), after commenting on the federal government's positive response to the National Resources Sector Employment Taskforce.
According to the AIG, a government report issued on the topic recognises that more people need to be employed in the country if the resources boom is to be handled effectively.
Heather Ridout, chief executive at the AIG, said: "The report … accepts that while we need to improve training and boost apprenticeships, that alone won't be enough and immigration programmes are essential to delivering skilled workers when and where we need them."
Earlier this month, a report from the Australian Bureau of Statistics revealed that the employment rate in Australia increased by 2.9 per cent from February 2010 to the same month of this year.
