The government does not seem to have a clear plan on how it is to create more affordable property in Australia, the Urban Taskforce has claimed.
Aaron Gadiel, the taskforce's chief executive, made this comment following the government's decision to cut the National Rental Affordability Scheme from 100,000 homes to just 35,000.
He said that this, combined with the halving of the Building Better Regional Cities Program, means that the government does not seem to be addressing the housing supply shortfall.
"The federal government should now move urgently to demonstrate that it is just as passionate about addressing the housing undersupply as it was when it was first elected in 2007," Mr Gadiel said.
He went on to say that, if this is not achieved through the existing programmes, then other schemes must be created in order to do so.
Earlier this month, the government of the Northern Territory of Australia revealed that some 174 new houses were built and 1,023 rebuilds and refurbishments were completed in the state by December 31st 2010.
