Australia 'will become diverse and dispersed'

Australia will change considerably over the next 40 or 50 years, an Australian property expert has claimed.

Michael Matusik, of Matusik Property Insights, wrote in his blog that Australia's urban future will be "diverse and dispersed".

He went on to say that people are starting to move further away from the country's state capital cities and that this will continue to happen.

"Within our capital cities themselves, the move downtown will slow … as the cost to live within close proximity to the central business districts is just too high compared to the real benefits," Mr Matusik wrote.

He went on to say that planners, architects and developers should not seek to create lots of small, closely-built properties.

Mr Matusik explained that, while these may be cheap to build, they are not currently popular among Australians, nor will they be in the future.

Back in April, Mr Matusik commented on statistics from the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, which showed Australian properties are generally much larger than those within Europe and even many American cities.
