August dwelling approval details revealed

The ABS has expanded on its figures for dwelling approvals across the country.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics has this week published a breakdown of its dwelling approval results for August 2012.

According to the organisation's findings, three states reported an increase in the number of dwelling approvals during the month - Victoria (30.2 per cent), Western Australia (16.1 per cent) and Queensland (1.8 per cent).

However, approval levels fell in New South Wales (-18.3 per cent), South Australia (-1.0 per cent) and Tasmania (-0.9 per cent).

During the month, the value of total house building across the country increased by 9.4 per cent - up 9.2 per cent for residential building and 9.8 per cent for non-residential.

Despite these figures, chief economist for the Housing Industry Association Harvey Dale told Property Wire earlier this week that Australia's new-build sector continues to struggle, claiming "new home sales for August are the latest in a string of soft new housing updates for this financial year".
