ABS outlines Australian property energy consumption

More energy is being consumed by Australian homeowners.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has highlighted an increase in household energy usage across the country.

According to the findings of the organisation's September Australian Social Trends report, Australian property owners are currently consuming 25 per cent more electricity and 22 per cent more gas than at the same time ten years ago.

Furthermore, it found that energy ratings for appliances have become an increasingly profound concern for many Australians in the past decade.

ABS director of social and progress reporting Sue Taylor said: "Households generally account for a quarter of Australia's overall energy consumption, with industry responsible for the remainder."

Earlier this month, the ABS revealed a significant fall in the level of homelessness witnessed across the country as part of its analysis of the 2006 census data.

It revealed how the rate of homelessness in the population fell from 51 to 45 individuals in every 10,000 persons between 2001 and 2006.
