Managing the population boom and ensuring there is enough Australian property for increasing numbers of people is one of the key issues facing local councils, it has been said.
Mayors and councillors from across the country met with federal government figures, including prime minister Kevin Rudd, to discuss their concerns on a wide range of issues, the AAP reported.
They told the government that more needs to be done to help cities cope, especially with growing populations, infrastructure and environmental challenges.
Local government minister Anthony Albanese said: "The people in this room are in a better position than any group that I can think of to determine and be on top of what are the actual local priorities."
During the meeting, Mr Rudd announced a further AUS$100 million (£59 million) investment into its programme for delivering council infrastructure.
The nation's capital cities have been said to be "critical" to the nation's building agenda, with a KPMG audit suggesting there is still a long way to go in order to meet the challenges of the future.
