Australia's Northern Territory was visited by more than 1.3 million tourists last year, a report from the Australian Bureau of Statistics has revealed.
In the final quarter of 2009, there were 97 hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms in the state, which employed around 3,100 people in total.
With around 1.3 million guests arriving at these accommodation venues last year, somewhere in the region of $253.8 million (£146.1 million) was generated.
Darwin received the highest number of guests at 605,500, which earned the city $145.8 million (£83.9 million) in takings.
Alice Springs welcomed 228,400 guests and reported $34.2 million (£19.6 million) in takings last year.
Last month, API magazine reported on Occupancy.com's Occupancy Accommodation Index, which predicted that there will be an increase in demand for holiday property in the first quarter of 2011.
The index also revealed that Australian property owners in the Northern Territory, Australian Capital Territory, Queensland and Western Australia were highly optimistic about their forecasts for the period between August and October.
