The number of Irish people that migrated to Australia increased by 22 per cent over the financial year that ended in June 2010.
Just fewer than 3,000 Irish citizens were granted permanent residency in the country over the 12-month period, Visa Bureau reports figures from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship as showing.
This means that Irish nationals made up 1.8 per cent of the total number of people that migrated to Australia in the 2009/2010 year.
The number of people who were granted an Australian Working Holiday Visa was down by 34.9 per cent on the previous year with 22,786 arriving on an Australian working holiday in the year ending June 2009 compared to 14,833 in 2009/2010.
Visa Bureau claims that this is because more people are choosing to permanently leave Ireland due to the country's poor economic situation.
Earlier this month, research conducted by the Ipsos-Eureka Social Research Institute on the behalf of Australia's Special Broadcasting Service revealed that 62 per cent of Australians would like their country to be a multicultural society.
