HIA welcomes govt deal on NRAS

The Housing Industry Association has welcomed a deal that will see the National Rental Affordability Scheme preserved.

A deal created between the Australian Greens Party and the government to preserve the National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS) has been welcomed by the Housing Industry Association (HIA).

This scheme is aimed at increasing the supply of new affordable rental property in Australia.

"We believe reinstating this programme would be a great outcome for the many Australians who are in dire need of more affordable rental housing," said Graham Wolfe, chief executive at the HIA.

He went on to say that, in negotiating support for the flood levy, the Greens have also secured an agreement from the government to build at least 50,000 new properties over the next four years.

In the government's flood response package, it had said it would reduce the number of dwellings it would help to build to 35,000.

Earlier this week, API Magazine reported real estate investment expert Peter Koulizos as saying that affordable property in Australia does still exist, but mostly outside of the cities.
