In most homes, the inside and outside worlds are linked by a simple door. However, if you are considering renovating or extending your home, a glass room can provide the perfect transition point while adding extra value and space.
Glass rooms are a great way to bring the outdoors inside your home, so you can catch the winter sun and still be able to enjoy the garden without sparing a second thought for icy breezes. The idea isn't new - the English have been installing conservatories on their homes for centuries to enjoy the sunlight and avoid the cold of the outside world.
A glass room extension can create an outdoor environment in any enclosed space, and is suitable for most homes, although there are a number of criteria to be considered:
- It should match the home's architectural style - colours, finishes, styles and glazing material should suit the home, else it may look like an afterthought.
- How will the room be used? It could be a dining area, garden room, rumpus room or pool enclosure.
- Take a good look at the outside to make sure the room works best with its surroundings. Does it look onto a garden, or out over panoramic views of water or valleys? Place furniture and plants to merge with the view beyond the glass, for a seamless transition.
- How many months of the year will you wish to use it - can it be protected from the heat of the summer sun, if necessary?
- Will you be growing plants, or putting a hot tub or pool in it? This may necessitate different ventilation and plumbing, making the project a lot more involved.
