First Home Buyers hit two-year high

The Victorian property market continues to gather pace on all fronts, as evidenced by the increasing number of first home buyers also entering the market.I am sure they are trying to get in before the prices shift up beyond their reach, and get away from the strong rental market and rent increases being experienced.

The number of first homebuyers in Victoria has hit its highest level in two years, according to new housing figures released recently by the Treasurer, John Brumby.

The figures from the Department of Treasury and Finance show there were 3613 First Home Bonus (FHB) and 3924 First Home Owner Grant (FHOG) applications in May, mostly from homebuyers in and around the metropolitan growth corridors.

"That's the highest number of applications in a month since June 2005", Mr Brumby said.
He said there had been a total of 105,316 FHB applications since its introduction in 2004, worth around $445 million to Victorian homeowners.

So far in 2006-07, there have been 33,228 FHB applications, worth $104.5 million and 35,571 FHOG applications worth $249 million.
