Bowen set for boom time

The Bowen region has attracted the support of the Queensland Government through it's local Member of Parliament.  In this article the local Member, Jan Jarrat, discusses why Bowes enjoying growth.

The mineral resources boom continues to underpin economic growth in the region and now Bowen is set to benefit from a duo of initiatives being backed by the Beattie Government.

Studies are well underway to ascertain the feasibility of bridging a rail link between North Goonyella and Newlands so that Bowen Basin coal can be railed to Abbot Point for export.

This project, known as the ‘Missing Links’ could see a massive increase in the tonnage of coal brought to Abbot Point and would involve many hundred jobs in the construction phase.

A further study is set to determine the feasibility of expanding coal loading capacity at Abbot Point to cater for the potential increase in coal delivery.

According to the Member for Whitsunday Jan Jarratt, these two projects have the potential to underpin an unprecedented economic revival for the Bowen economy.

“Much depends on securing agreements with the mining companies, but if given the go-ahead, these two projects could be the catalyst for a massive growth in employment and associated service industries,” Ms Jarratt said.

“The Missing Link project and Abbott Point expansion could herald the beginning of a new and exciting era for Bowen and I am very proud of the Government’s key role in supporting both projects.
