The number of births registered in Queensland increased by five per cent from 2008 to 2009, new figures have shown.
A report from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reveals that 66,100 births were registered in Queensland in 2009, compared to 63,100 in the previous year.
Only Queensland and the Australian Capital Territory recorded increases in the number of births registered from 2008 to 2009.
The Queensland Registry embarked on a number of projects in 2009 to improve the timeliness of the data it provides to the ABS, which could provide some explanation for the increase.
Of the births registered in 2009, some 5,200 of the children born had at least one parent who was of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander origin.
Earlier this month, the ABS revealed that Australia's population increased by 377,100 in the 12 months leading up to June 30th of this year.
The report shows that there were around 22,342,000 people living in the country by the end of June.
