Ballarat could soon gain a new World Heritage site, which may interest those looking for Australian property in Victoria.
John Brumby, the state's premier, recently stated that the government will be looking for a listing for the state's goldfields, the Courier has reported.
According to the news provider, this does not go far enough as there are plenty of sites in the area deserving of this recognition.
It lists the Mt Alexander Diggings National Heritage Park as a good starting point, but stated that many of the sites which hold a historical significance to the goldrush should be protected.
"It's a decision which could take a number of years. That gives those who are passionate about Ballarat tourism plenty of time to make sure we too can reap the benefits," he explained.
The country as a whole is concentrating on boosting its tourism appeal, with trade minister Simon Crean recently announcing the launch of a new AUS$20 million (£11.7 million) marketing campaign designed to promote the country.
