More than half of Australians prefer single dwellings to multiple dwellings, a new report has revealed.
The Productivity Commission surveyed Australians about attitudes to population growth and the changes that would have to be made in order to accommodate it.
According to the Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV), a report on the findings shows that 53 per cent of those surveyed were opposed to multiple dwellings replacing single dwellings.
Only 29 per cent of those quizzed said they were opposed to residential development in a new area.
"Opposition to infill development is in part why the cost of infill development is higher and the preference given to green-fields development results in higher costs for government in the form of more roads and public transport," said a statement from the REIV.
Earlier this month, Tony Burke MP, the minister for sustainability, environment, water, population and communities, launched the sustainable population strategy.
