The number of Australian households is expected to increase by up to four million in the next 25 years, according to population and property projections from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
This equates to some 11.8 million households in 2031, up from 7.8 million in 2006.
According to the ABS, most of the future Australian properties will be family households, with eight million such dwellings in place by 2031.
Couple-only families are also set to be more prominent in Australia, as the ageing population means baby boomers will become empty nesters in the coming years, the ABS said.
More Australian households will also have people living alone - 3.6 million by 2031, it continued.
The average number of people in each residential Australian property is set to fall from 2.6 in 2006 to 2.4 in 2031, around the same size as Japan and New Zealand.
