Australia visited by 477,700 people during July

Australia was visited by around 477,700 people this July, which is a 4.1 per cent increase on the number that visited in the same month of 2009.

Some 477,700 people visited Australia on a short-term basis during July, new statistics have shown.

A report from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) showed that this is around the same number that visited the country in the previous month.

The figure recorded for July of this year is 4.1 per cent higher than that of the same month in 2009.

Originally, the ABS had estimated that 514,800 short-term visitors had come to the country.

The bureau's new report shows that 601,200 Australian residents left the country for a short period of time, which is a 1.2 per cent increase on the figure recorded in June.

However, this current trend estimate for departures is 14.5 per cent higher than the number recorded in July 2009.

Last month, an ABS report titled Regional Statistics, Northern Territory revealed that Australia's Northern Territory was visited by more than 1.3 million tourists last year.
