Architects reveal Australian property of the future

The vision for Australian property in the future has been laid out, including floating homes.

More Australian property may be created in the outback or on floating islands near the country, according to predictions of the future.

The Ideas for Australian Cities 2050+, created by leading architects, looks at ways to tackle rising sea levels and reduced space in the country.

In the report, it is predicted that the population of the country will rise by 60 per cent, to 35 million, while Heather Ridout, chief executive of the Australian Industry Group, said that the focus over the next decades is the future of the city.

Larissa Brown, a spokesperson for the Center for Sustainable Leadership, added: "If we have a rising population, we need to make sure that we have appropriate infrastructure, so that we don't lose the social cohesion that we take for granted."

Other changes which will be needed, in addition to Australian property, are improvements to the public transport system and reducing congestion on the roads.

Caryn Kakas, executive director of the Residential Development Council, recently said that the only way to stop price rises in Australian property is to meet the backlog of homes, which is 200,000 on top of the 155,000 required each year.
