A backlog in the Australian taxation system should be sorted out by the end of February, it has been revealed.

More than half a million Australian taxpayers have been stuck in the clogged-up system, with the problem starting over the Australia Day weekend when the Tax Office transferred to a new computer system, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

Test runs have cleared some of the 705,000 tax returns and, if the full-speed run due today goes to plan, most of the backlog will be cleared by the end of February.

Second commissioner David Butler explained that the old system could not continue to run while the new one was set up and revealed that the Tax Office would pay the interest on late returns.

The previous Australian taxation processing system was put in place in the mid 1970s and has now been replaced by an integrated core processing system.
