Australians for Affordable Housing (AAH) has warned that many students face a struggle to find accommodation over the coming months because of high rental costs across the country.
The Australian property lobby group warned that, ahead of many students returning to university, three in four of those who are receiving rent assistance face studying in poverty because of their housing costs.
"A shortage of affordable rental housing means that it's harder for students, who often have no rental history, to get a place they can afford," said AAH campaign manager Sarah Toohey.
She added that increasing the financial assistance given to students in this situation could help assuage the problem, which reflects a nationwide issue with the price of accommodation.
AAH figures suggest that one in four Australians between the age of 24 and 35 lives with their parents, due to the prohibitive expense involved in renting or purchasing housing.
