Third of couples are delaying having children to buy property

Some 34 per cent of people are prioritising getting their foot on the Australian property ladder over having children, a survey has revealed.

A third of couples down under are delaying starting a family in order to get their foot on the Australian property ladder.

This is according to Aaron Maskrey of real estate company PRDnationwide, which surveyed more than 2,000 people across the country.

Some 34 per cent of respondents said they were considering putting off having children as the price of property in Australia increases.

Mr Maskrey said: "The long-term trend has seen prices for houses rising, however the recent softening of values in many areas are likely to tempt many potential purchasers into home ownership as these conditions will not hold in the long-term."

He went on to say that this is having an impact on other important life decisions.

Last month, David Airey, president of the Real Estate Institute of Australia, suggested that first-time buyers could help Australian property to flourish once again and that work needs to be done to entice this group back to the market.
