Australian property body the Housing Industry Association (HIA) has welcomed the government's plans to reassess three national building codes, suggesting that streamlining these could help boost construction in the country.
Chief executive officer Wilhelm Harnisch expressed his hope the re-evaluation would be conducted with the aim of reducing the burden of red tape and improving productivity rates in the sector.
He added that a universal, well-enforced building code would help standardise conditions and improve the construction environment, criticising a "lack of transparency" in the current development processes laid out by the federal government.
"The building and construction industry contributes to close to eight per cent of the country's economic output. Improved productivity will help the industry maintain its vital contribution," concluded Mr Harnisch.
Attempts are being made by the Australian Building and Construction Board to bring all on-site regulations into one universal framework aimed at improving worker safety in the sector.
