The Green Cities 2012 Challenge has been unveiled by the Property Council of Australia, calling on individuals and firms alike to innovate in how best to achieve the country's sustainable future.
Changes to the way Australian property is constructed and made more energy efficient are requested as part of the green initiative.
Judges at the Property Council will assess entrants into this year's challenge for their feasibility and the likely impact that implementing their plans will have on Australia's future as a greener society.
The deadline for entry is September 21st and all those interested in taking part must submit a case study of their proposals.
In order to ensure these plans are as concise and achievable as possible, entrants are advised to focus on a specific aspect of green design.
Earlier this month, the Brisbane Times reported a small business owner in Kallangur, north Brisbane has fit AU$12,000 of solar panels to his home and now receives a cheque for AU$1,500 per quarter from the national grid as he sends so much energy back to the provider.
