Govt to implement regional migration initiatives

A range of regional migration initiatives are to be introduced in Australia, the government has announced.

The Australian government is to implement a range of regional migration initiatives in 2011-12, minister for immigration and citizenship Chris Bowen announced today as part of the Budget.

A measured increase in permanent migration has also been introduced, with 185,000 visas to be supplied in 2011-12.

About two-thirds of these visas will be supplied to skilled migrants to help fill gaps in workforces, particularly in regional areas.

"The patchwork nature of the Australian labour market means it's important to recognise unique local circumstances and tailor migration solutions accordingly," Mr Bowen said.

He went on to say that the Regional Migration Agreements would offer a "coordinated, localised response to labour needs".

Last month, Don Voelte, Woodside Petroleum's chief executive said that more skilled workers are needed in Australia, otherwise planned liquefied natural gas projects could fail.

He was speaking at the Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association's conference in Perth, Western Australia.
