CFMEU action challenged by MBA chief

A call for change in industrial dispute resolution has been made by the chief of the MBA.

Chief executive officer of Master Builders Australia (MBA) Wilhelm Harnisch has said the ongoing dispute between union CFMEU and developer Grocon highlights the need for change in industrial relations law.

He commented: "The bullying tactics displayed by the CFMEU vindicates the building industry’s call for the return of the Australian Building and Construction Commission and dedicated industry-specific laws which target unlawful and intimidatory conduct."

Mr Harnisch added that the Australian property construction sector therefore needs a stronger regulatory body than the Fair Work Building and Construction agency, as it has so far been unable to intervene in the ongoing dispute.

Earlier this month, the MBA claimed the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics regarding  a 4.9 per cent increase in finance for the construction of new homes in June points to an increasingly positive outlook for construction over the coming months and the possibility of a sustained recovery.
