All levels of govt 'need to act to relieve housing shortage'

The government, at all levels, needs to take action to ensure that housing supply is not suppressed in Australia

All levels of government need to take action to address the barriers that are constraining housing supply in Australia, the Housing Industry Association (HIA) has claimed.

The association said that the country is currently facing a housing affordability crisis, which needs to be addressed or people's dream to own Australian property will be dashed.

"HIA research shows that while many factors contribute to the housing affordability picture, a major cause of falling affordability is that house price growth has outpaced growth in average wages over recent years," said HIA chief executive Graham Wolfe.

He went on to say that "serious and urgent" policy changes need to be made to ensure that the building of affordable residential property continues in Australia.

Recent figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed that engineering construction activity carried out in Australia in the September quarter of 2010 was valued at $19.9 million (£12.4 million).
