A total of 55 Indian students have been sent home by Australian immigration authorities after it was revealed they had breached the terms of their residency.
According to the Australian, the individuals were among 150 people from overseas locations who had the documentation removed upon returning to the country during the last financial year.
Reported in the Economic Times, it emerged that the group of students had failed to maintain an enrolment in an educational institute, which was vital to their stay in Australia.
The 55 individuals are the largest group to have their visas cancelled at the airport, with 37 Chinese people also among those that were sent home.
This news comes after statistics from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship revealed that 9,000 out of 470,221 student visa holders were questioned by immigration officials.
Earlier this week, Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced a step forward in the launch of the country's Multicultural Council, which aims to tackle problems surrounding the issue.
