Women are gaining more influence when it comes to the purchase of property in Australia, the Independent Property Group has claimed.
John Runko, chief executive officer of the group, outlined in the Real Estate Institute of Australia's (REIA's) May newsletter results of research carried out by his firm.
Of almost 600 property transactions, 49 per cent were bought by couples and 34 per cent were bought by men on their own. Meanwhile, 17 per cent were bought by women on their own.
"Although men bought twice as many of the sample properties on their own than women, women are certainly having a greater influence in the buying decision of couples than they have had in the past," Mr Runko said.
He went on to say that the biggest trend shift was not in gender, but in the fact that more single people are buying property than couples.
Whether male, female, single or in a couple, those looking to buy cheap property in Australia should steer clear of Victoria, as the REIA's recent Housing Affordability Report showed that this was the second most expensive state for houses and apartments.
