WA tourism 'increased in 2010'

A significantly higher number of people visited Western Australia last year than they did in 2009, a new report has revealed.

The number of people visiting Western Australia (WA) increased significantly in 2010, new figures have shown.

Propell National Valuers' National Visitor Survey shows that the number of people who visited WA from other states in Australia increased by 15.6 per cent last year.

This means that some 1,095,000 people visited the state in 2010 and the amount spent by visitors increased by 16.1 per cent, which is significantly higher than the national average.

In terms of international travellers, the number that visited WA last year increased by 6.7 per cent on the previous year, which is higher than the national average of a rise of 5.1 per cent.

"International visitors to WA are also spending more and the growth in 2010 was higher than the national average," the report states.

Last month, demographer Bernard Salt, a KPMG partner, wrote in a piece for the Australian newspaper that the middle of WA is now the fastest growing municipality in the country in terms of population.
