Some 488,500 people visited Australia on a short-term basis in May, new seasonally-adjusted figures have revealed.

Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that this is a decrease of one per cent on the number that visited the country on this basis in April.

In trend terms, some 480,300 people paid a short-term visit to Australia in May, which is a 0.5 per cent decrease on the number that visited in the previous month.

This is also a 0.4 per cent decrease on the number of people who visited Australia for a short period in May 2010.

As for people who left the country for a short period of time, perhaps for a holiday or business trip, this reached 649,400 in May in seasonally-adjusted terms.

Last month, Tourism Australia visited the Americas Meeting and Events Exhibition in Baltimore, Maryland, with the aim of convincing more people in the US to visit Australia.
