Visitor numbers up on Shipwreck Coast

Victoria's Shipwreck Coast has become increasingly popular with overseas and domestic visitors in the past year, according to figures.

It has defied state trends by attracting more people, the Standard reported, with the area's marketing director Carole Reid pointing to a 4.3 per cent rise in international visitors for the figures to the end of 2009.

A total of 65,800 international visitors headed to the Shipwreck Coast last year, staying for an average of just over two nights, Ms Reid said.

She explained that domestic visitors from throughout the country stayed in the Shipwreck Coast's Australian property for 1.497 million nights during the year.

"One of the good things for our region is that of all the Great Ocean Road, we have the highest number who stop in paid accommodation," Ms Reid told the news provider.

The Shipwreck Coast covers around 180 km of coastline, taking in cities and towns including Warrnambool, Port Fairy, Koroit, Allansford and Timboon.
