A group of 20 inpats joined in a special ceremony in Burnie, Tasmania, today (September 2nd) to celebrate the launch of Australian Citizenship Day 2010.
These people, who are originally from a number of countries including Japan, the United Kingdom, India and Korea, were the first of thousands of people across the country to become citizens in the run up to the special day on September 17th.
"Australian Citizenship Day was introduced in 2001 as an opportunity for people to take pride in our citizenship and reflect on the meaning and importance of being Australian," a Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) spokesman explained.
Around 3,600 people from 118 countries will become Australian citizens in 69 ceremonies across the country as part of this year's celebration.
Last month the Sunday Mercury reported that a record number of families in Birmingham had been leaving the English city and investing in property in Australia.
