Sydney Opera House has not been chosen, after all, as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, but has nevertheless been awarded World Heritage listing.
The Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA) see UNESCO's decision to recognise the Sydney Opera House with World Heritage listing as a win-win outcome for the iconic building and the millions who flock to see it every year.
Speaking on behalf of the architecture profession, RAIA NSW Chapter President Dr Deborah Dearing said that it is pleasing that the Sydney Opera House has finally received the recognition it deserves as one of the greatest pieces of architecture in the world.
"This listing represents international acknowledgement of the value of the house as an outstanding work of architecture, and I have no doubt it will assist in the long term protection of the integrity of the design," Dr Dearing said.
The New Seven Wonders of the World - also announced this week - include the Great Wall of China, India's Taj Mahal, the centuries-old pink ruins of Petra in Jordan, the Colosseum in Rome and the Incan ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru. Our Opera House can still hold its head up - other runners up included the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Acropolis in Athens and the statues on Easter Island.
