Sydney Harbour Bridge turns 75

Sydney's famous bridge known affectionally as "The Coat Hanger" turns the youthful age of 75 on the 19th March 2007.Through initial controversy on the cost, it has become a world icon, instanty recignisable around the world and a symbol of this wonderful city.

Sydney will mark the 75th Anniversary of this great Australian icon with a day of celebrations. In keeping with the scale of the Bridge itself, this celebration will earn a place on the national stage providing a day of shared history and memories for family, friends, colleagues, neighbours - all Australians, for decades to come.

On 19 March 1932 the Sydney Harbour Bridge was formally opened to the public, uniting the communities of the North and South shores of Sydney Harbour.

That event attracted almost the entire population of Sydney and thousands more within NSW, and nationally.
