The most popular new properties in Australia are sustainable and also let in lots of light.
This is according to the Australian newspaper's Martin Kelly, who spoke to five architects about the latest trends in housing design.
Mr Kelly wrote in a piece in the newspaper that cross-ventilation is desirable, as is orientation to the north, but with shading, so that the property is cool in summer but warm over the winter months.
Melbourne architect Norman Day told the paper that people are not looking for mansions, but are seeking smaller, more efficient houses.
"We're coming to the realisation that we don't need a castle. There's a real interest in harvesting water, solar power and trying to get off the electricity grid," he explained.
Last week, Mr Kelly claimed that Sydney will lead the way in Australia's property market recovery.
He also asserted that Perth will turn the corner this year, following mediocre growth at the end of 2010.
