Almost a quarter of international students study in Australia in the hope of becoming permanent residents, a survey has revealed.
The online study, carried out by JWT Education, showed an increase from the five per cent figure recorded in 2005.
Under new Australian migration rules, priority is given to skilled migrants who have a job offer in place.
Previously, foreign students on certain trade courses had been almost guaranteed permanent residency.
The survey also highlighted that two-thirds of students take safety into account when deciding where to study, with many of those heading to Australian educational establishments saying the country is safe and tolerant.
Visa requirements for international students heading to Australia vary depending on what type of course they are studying.
There are also different rules for working visas, tourists and those who wish to retire in Australia.
