Spending money on roads 'is crucial'

If Australia's cities are to be successful in the future, the government needs to invest in building new roads, the Urban Taskforce has claimed.

Spending money on building new roads in Australia is crucial to the country's cities being successful in the future.

This is according to Aaron Gadiel, chief executive at the Urban Taskforce, who said that strong urban investment would support growth.

He went on to say that meritorious projects, such as the construction of new motorways, are often sidelined in favour of proposals that gain political parties more support and votes.

Mr Gadiel said that no city can survive on public transport alone, so the construction of new roads is highly important.

"An efficient roads network will continue to be crucial, and will require ongoing federal, state and local government investment," he concluded.

Earlier this week, Anna Blight, premier of the Queensland government, announced changes to local government infrastructure charges.

A cap has been put on the charges for trunk infrastructure, which includes new roads, parks, water works and sewerage systems.
