Slingers drive basketball history

The Singapore Slingers Challenge series may have ended, but it paved the way for history to begin, when the SEABA announced the creation of the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL).This is great news for the aussieproperty.com sponsored Slingers, who came out of the Australian League in July 08 in preparation for this to occur.

aussieproperty.com and SMATS Group have been invovled with the Singapore Slingers as a sponsor for just on two years, so we were delighted when the announcement of a ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) became official on Monday the 19th January, 2009.

Slingers Chairman, Tony Fernandez of Air Asia fame, has been the driving force in making the ABL a reality much sooner than many believed was possible.

All 10 ASEAN countries will be invited to particpate, with the expectation that eight teams will be involved when the inaugrial season tips off in September 2009.

It has been a long battle for Slingers boss, Bob Turner, to keep the passion of basketball alive in Singapore after the team withdrew form the Australian National Basketball League last July.  His hard work and the committment shown by all the Slingers players, coaching staff and administration should be applauded and was a major catalyst behind the progress made to establish the ABL.

This news is all the more rewarding when you consider the achievements of the team over the past 6 months.

After announcing they would not compete in the Australian competition, the Slingers won the pre season tournament, the Brunei Cup, arranged the Singapore Challenge Series against teams from all over the region and lost just one of 11 games, and saw the development of Singaporean basketball talent with all five players on court for the final minutes of the last Challenge Series game all home grown in Singapore.

All of these great feats on the court were matched with a record single game attendance of 8,000 during the Challenge Series which included teams from the Phiippines, Malaysia, Indonesia and Australia.

There is much to look forward to in the first year of the ABL and aussieproperty.com and SMATS group will be there to help.

The hard work begins now, as the Slingers go about the task of building a potential Championship team capable of winning the league in its maiden year.

They will need your help, which you can provide in many ways.

As an individual, consider a Season Ticket membership, make a note to come along and watch some games (its great family fun), spread the word and get involved.

As a corporate, find out about the many different sponsorship or ticketing programs on offer from only S$1,000.  It is great for team building, client socialising, corporate family events and community connection programs.

We have until September, but that time will pass very quickly, so contact Slingers Managing Director, Bob Turner by email on bob.turner@singaporeslingers.com and start discussing your options.

We are proud of our Singapore Slingers, and so enjoy getting to the games.  Come and join the excitement with us.
